Sky Sports: Savio went on an exciting run but finished it with a shot that almost went for a throw-in, then he got booked for a sliding challenge on Morrison as the Baggies midfielder raided down the right flank. It was the last contribution the youngster made as Zola brought on Junior Stanislas for the final quarter, replacing the player he bought in a £9million deal in January.
Hammers Mad: After winning at the JJB Stadium last time out, Zola had been forced to make two switches as pint-sized teenagers Savio Nsereko and Freddie Sears came in for Jack Collison (knee) and suspended top-scorer Carlton Cole. And the absence of the Hammers' missing marksman was all too apparent as Sears, David Di Michele and the supporting Savio each found themselves out-muscled and out-witted by a dogged Albion defence.
Hammer's Diary: Savio showed the occasional neat bit of trickery but far too often lost out when in possession. He is shoved off the ball all too easily. I still think he is being played in the wrong position, though. He needs to play behind the lead striker in the centre. I just don’t see him on the wing.
Daily Express : With Cole out, Zola had handed a first start to Ugandan-born Germany Under-19 striker Savio who joined the Hammers in January for a fee that could rise to £9 million. Zola has likened Savio, 19 to himself as a young player, but the forward’s main contribution to the opening period was to win a corner and fall over a lot. He was booked midway through the second half before being replaced by Junior Stanislas.
Daily Mirror: Manager Gianfranco Zola took his squad away to Marbella last week for warmweather training. Next time he should save the club a few bob and just buy a few canisters of spray-on tan instead. Despite the keen competition, most impoverished performance of the night came from record £9m signing Savio, the Ugandan-born German Under-19 international who didn't look like he knew rhyming slang from Vorsprung durch Technik. Sportingly, Zola cocked a deaf ear to the boos, saying: "It doesn't bother me too much - it just makes me think even deeper to try and find a solution. (Mike Walters)
