The Douglass Aircraft Company began work on a new bomber, the Douglass Dauntless in 1938. However, it was not until 1940, that the aircraft went into combat. Like the Grumman Hellcat was assigned to aircraft carriers such as the Yorktown, Lexington and Saratoga

It had a maximum speed of 250 mph (402 km) and had a range of 1,345 miles (2,164 km). It was 32 ft 8 in (9.96 m) long with a wingspan of 41 ft 6 in (12.65 m). The aircraft, which had a crew of two, was armed with 4 machine-guns and could carry 1,200 lb (544 kg) of bombs.
