The King George V was commissioned in 1940. Along with the Prince of Wales and the Duke of York, was the most heavily armoured warship in the world and began service as the flag ship of the Home Fleet.

The King George V joined Rodney, the Dorsetshire and the Norfork in the attack on the Bismarck and on 26th May 1941. It played an important role in sinking Germany's largest battleship when it set her ablaze with a series of hits from 14,000 yards.

In May 1943 the King George V began operations in the Mediterranean and fought in the later stages of the Pacific War. In 1945 it took part in the bombardment of the Japanese mainland.
