The Soviet State Industries began producing the Lavochkin LaGG-3 for the Red Army Air Force in 1939. Designed by Semyon Lavochkin it had a maximum speed of 348 mph (560 km) and had a range of 404 miles (650 km). It was 29 ft 1 in (8.86 m) long with a wingspan of 32 ft 2 in (9.80 m). The aircraft was armed with a 20 mm cannon, three machine-guns and carried 440 lb (200 kg) of bombs.
The Lavochkin LaGG-3 was a great success and made a considerable contribution to the Soviet Union eventually gaining air supremacy on the Eastern Front during the Second World War.
