Pathfinders were night-bomber
squadrons whose crews were selected for their navigating skills. After
August 1942 they flew at the head of night-bombing raids on Nazi
Germany. Using oboe, a improved navigational
device based on radar, the team's main
task was to drop accurate markers (flares and incendiaries) over the
intended target. This system considerably improved the Royal
Air Force record of finding targets at night.
