Lesson M3: William Plans an Invasion of England



When William of Normandy heard that the the Witan had chosen Harold of Wessex as king in January 1066, he began making plans to invade England.

Activity 1: Read about William's invasion plans and then finish off the following statements:

(a) By July 1066 William of Normandy had raised an army of

(b) William was a Christian and it was very important to him

(c) William had to arrange the building of

Activity 2: William knew that soon after arriving in England he would be involved in a large battle with Harold's army. It was therefore important for William to make plans about the tactics he intended to use. Before he could do this he had to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the two sides.

Print out Chart MR4. Read about the two armies and fill in the details on the chart.

Activity 3: Study your completed chart. If you were William of Normandy, what tactics would you use when you had to fight Harold's Army in England?
