William
of Normandy heard that the the Witan
had chosen Harold
of Wessex as
king in January 1066, he began making plans to invade England.
Activity 1: Read about William's invasion
plans and then finish off the following statements:
(a) By July 1066 William of Normandy had raised an army of

Activity 2: William knew that soon after arriving in England
he would be involved in a large battle with Harold's
army. It was therefore important for William to make plans
about the tactics he intended to use. Before he could do this
he had to assess the strengths and weaknesses of the two sides.
