Andre Gill

Andre Gill was born in France in 1840. He started on the Le Journal Amusant but made his name with a series of portraits for La Lune, entitled The Man of the Day. His caricatures were extremely accurate and as they were not cruel, famous people wanted to be drawn by him. However, Emperor Napoleon disliked his portrait and in 1868 the journal was banned. Gill was active in the Paris Commune and during the conflict worked for the socialist paper, La Rue. Andre Gill died in 1885.
