Herbert
Johnson worked
as a clerk, a stenographer and bookkepper before becoming a cartoonist
with the Saturday Evening Post.
He shared his employer's conservative political views and supported
the Republican Party and its presidents,
Warren Harding (1921-1923), Calvin
Coolidge (1923-1929), Herbert Hoover
(1929-33). In the 1930s Johnson was a harsh critic of Franklin
D. Roosevelt and the New Deal.
