Robert Sherriffs was born in Edinburgh in 1908. After studying at the Edinburgh College of Arts he began having his cartoons published in The Bystander and The Sketch. In 1934 he drew a weekly cartoon for the Radio Times.

After the Second World War Sherriffs was expected to become staff cartoonist on the Daily Herald but this went to his friend, George Whitelaw, instead. Sherriffs worked at Punch Magazine until his death in 1961.
