Guide to Perth: Offset by the vast tranquil waters of the Swan River, the beautiful city of Perth is a tourist's delight. Modern and vibrant, it contrasts with its historic counterpart - the port city of Fremantle accessible within 20 minutes by car from Perth.
Ancient beginnings Australia's first inhabitants were Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders. They are believed to have arrived in migratory waves from south east Asia between 40,000 and 150,000 years ago, making Australia one of the oldest continents in the world both geologically and in terms of continuous human history. Australia's indigenous people now make up only 1.5 percent of Australia's total population, with approximately two thirds living in cities and towns and the balance living in rural and remote areas. Some of these people maintain a traditional way of life.

Wikipedia: Perth is the capital of the Australian state of Western Australia. A population of 1,507,900 makes Perth by far the largest city in Western Australia and home to three-quarters of the state's residents.
Perth was founded on 11 June 1829 by Captain James Stirling as the political centre of the free settler Swan River Colony. It has continued to serve as the seat of Government for Western Australia to the present day.
The metropolitan area is located in the south west of the continent between the Indian Ocean and a low coastal escarpment known as the Darling Range. The central business district and suburbs of Perth are situated on the Swan River. The nearest city to Perth with a population over 1 million is Adelaide in South Australia, which is 2,104 kilometres (1,307 mi) away, making Perth the most isolated city (of over 1 million people) in the world.
Cloud Nine: If you want to add a nature experience to a city then Perth is well placed, as to the south are the great forests, and the beaches and caves of the Margaret River area which also produces fine wine.
Wildflowers are ablaze in spring (September/October) but any time of year has its attractions. Western Australia is as big as Western Europe, but with plenty of flights to choose from you needn’t feel isolated flying into Perth. Head north to discover the wild dolphins of Monkey Mia and the Shark Bay World Heritage Site, or even further north for the rugged adventure country of the Kimberley and the Bungle Bungle mountains.

Perth Highlights
Penguin Island is a truly unique place. Only 42 kilometres from the centre of Perth, it is home to a diverse array of wildlife and boasts breathtaking marine and coastal scenery. It is home to the largest colony of little penguins on the west coast and probably Western Australia. The small, 12.5-hectare island is less than 700 metres off shore from the growing regional centre of Rockingham.
Penguin Island, is one of the State's premier ecologically sustainable nature-based tourism destinations. The island has something special for visitors of all ages, whether from the local or metropolitan area, interstate or overseas. The waters surrounding the island form the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park.
Fremantle today retains much of its old charm: its situation at the mouth of the Swan River, its picturesque old buildings, its cultural diversity and what its longtime residents still call the Fremantle feeling. This sets it apart from the capital, Perth. The feeling comes upon you when you cross the bridge over the Swan River from the northern suburbs, pass historic Cantonment Hill from the east or (ideally) drift down river from Perth in a pleasure boat.
Fremantle is a working port, host to a big fishing fleet as well as container ships and the occasional large cruise vessel. It maintains a vibrant commercial life and is a desirable tourist destination. It has, however, retained its cosmopolitan nature and preserved its identity, largely through the good sense and dedication of its modern-day civic managers.
Wave Rock: Leaving Perth eastward along the Great Eastern Highway, as you drive up Greenmount Hill in the Darling Range, you are climbing up onto the oldest plateau on earth: a huge slab of granite, part of ancient Gondawana, sitting in the sun, wind and rain for more than a thousand million years. It has eroded down into the soils of the valleys, and the chains of lakes, and the old blind volcanos like Hyden Rock have been exposed.
Kalgoorlie: The discovery of gold by Paddy Hannan in 1893 led to one of Australia's great gold rushes. Since then Kalgoorlie-Boulder has developed into a major service hub for Western Australia's active resource industry. Dominated by magnificent historic architecture, Hannan and Burt Streets provide a focus for modern cafés, restaurants and accommodation, hotels, clubs and watering holes.
