Laurenco
de Gusmao, a priest from Brazil, designed a flying machine called
a Passarola. In 1709 he was granted an audience with the King of
Portugal. He launched this bird-shaped glider but it hit some curtains
in the room and set fire to them. It is believed that this was the
first lighter-than-air
flying machine in history.
