John (Jack) Beattie was born in Newhills on 28th May 1912. He played local football before joining Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1933. In his first season at the club he scored 13 goals and in December 1934 he was transferred to Blackburn Rovers for a fee of £5,000.

Beattie formed a great partnership with fellow forwards Ernie Thompson and Jack Bruton.

W.D. & H.O. Wills produced a series of cards called Association Footballers in 1935 that contained an impressive portrait of Jack Beattie. The card said: "He went to Blackburn at a time when their position in the First Division table was disturbing, and he brought about a good deal of improvement in the attack."

Blackburn Rovers was relegated in the 1935-36 season. Beattie remained in the top flight by signing for Birmingham City. During his time at Blackburn he had scored 17 goals in 76 games.

Beattie 10 league goals helped Birmingham finish in 11th place in the 1936-37 season. Beattie then had spells with Huddersfield Town, Grimsby Town (13 goals in 59 games) and Walsall. Beattie's football career was brought to an end by the outbreak of the Second World War.

Jack Beattie died in 1992.
