Arnold Whiteside was born in Garstang on 6th November 1911. A wing-half, he joined Blackburn Rovers in 1932. He joined a team that included Syd Puddefoot, Jack Bruton, Jack Roscamp and Henry Healless.
Whiteside made his debut in the 1932-33 season. That year he made 14 appearances and the club finished in 15th place. The following season he made 19th appearances but he was a first-team regular in the 1934-35 season. He also scored his debut goal against Everton 6-2 on 20th August 1935.
In 1936 Whiteside appeared in the Carreras cigarette card series, "Popular Footballers". The card described Whiteside as: "A strong half-back who combines well in defence and attack... He is a clever schemer and relies on skilfull football rather than bustling tactics." However, that season, the club finished bottom and was relegated.
After two seasons in the Second Division, Bob Crompton agreed to takeover again as manager. In his first season (1938-39) Blackburn Rovers won the league championship and won promotion to the First Division. That season Whiteside played in 40 league and cup games.
The Football League was abandoned during the Second World War. The government imposed a fifty mile travelling limit and the Football League divided all the clubs into seven regional areas where games could take place. Blackburn Rovers became a member of the North West Regional League.
Whiteside returned to Blackburn Rovers after the war and when he left the club in 1948 he had scored 3 league goals in 221 games.
Arnold Whiteside died on 12th September 1994.
