Why Study for an MBA?
An MBA – Masters in Business Administration – is an intense, postgraduate training course that prepares you for the business world at a senior level. Usually taken as a career break, pausing to do an MBA is a very productive detour and in a competitive environment, it can certainly add some much-needed bulk to a CV.
Its primary design is to take all your previous work experience and to strengthen it so that you may take on more managerial roles, or senior positions. When you're applying for the course, it's usual that you'll be expected to be equipped with a sense of what it's like to work in the business world, so that the training you get is spent enhancing your experiences, not going over the basics.
What the MBA offers, are those all-important skills you may not pick up simply on the job, like financial, statistical, and managerial economics, which will aim to show you the details of the industry and how industry competition works at a fundamental level. These teaching methods, have earned the MBA the sometime title, ‘a boot camp' for managers, because students are drilled on their previous experiences, and driven through a mountain of new information. It all happens at a very fast-pace and students are expected to compete with fellow colleague to stay ahead of the class.
Over the years, the success of the MBA – which has its roots in America and is popular amongst Harvard graduates heading to Wall Street – has seen its courses slimming down and spreading out to accommodate for competition. This is not to say that they have lessened in quality, there are just many to pick and choose from.
Of course, the better the school, the better connected they are and the better their contacts will be, meaning your MBA will sparkle on your CV. Like any course, do your appropriate research. Ashridge have a well-noted reputation for the MBA and other leadership training. You might also want to check out the London School of Economics for postgraduate courses that will offer academic strengths to your experiences.
