The first Italian tank was not produced until the final stages of the war. Built by the Fiat company in Turin, the Carro Armato was the same length as the Mark V, however, because of the taller hull, it was rather more roomy inside. This was the first tank that had a cannon-armed revolving turret. This type of tank had been rejected by the British, French and German engineers because they were concerned by the higher centre of gravity. The tank had a ten man crew, including eight gunners. Weighing 40 tons it had a maximum speed of just over 4 mph. Only two of these tanks were built and they did not appear until the final weeks of the war.
