Howard Kullberg was born in Somerville, Massachusetts on 10th September 1896. Kullberg was rejected by the United States Air Service as being too short. He therefore joined the Royal Flying Corps in Canada.

In May 1918 Kullberg arrived on the Western Front but after 19 victories was shot down on 16th September 1918. Severely wounded, Kullberg spent the rest of the war in hospital.
