The International Internet Encyclopedia of the First World War is being created by teachers and students from several different countries. So far schools in the USA, Germany, France, Greece and Ireland have joined the project. It is hoped that others will join in the next few months.
Each entry in the encyclopedia involves several pages of text, illustrations and links to other relevant websites. The strategy is to look at the international, the national and the local dimension of the conflict. By the middle of 1998 we hope to have over 500 pages of information in the encyclopedia.
The contents page contains details of what is currently being developed. However, this is an organic project and only those headings that are gold and underlined have so far been uploaded. Existing entries are also constantly being improved as the students find out more information on the subject.
The encyclopedia also has a local history section. My students have been researching East Grinstead in the First World War and have so far produced several entries on the impact that this conflict had on the town. In time we will have similar sections on the towns where the other schools involved in the project are situated.
Please e-mail me if you have any suggestions on how the Encyclopedia of the First World War could be improved. We would also like you to contact us if you wish to become involved in the project. Your students can e-mail contributions (text only) that they would like the editor to consider for publication in the main encyclopedia. Another possibility is for your school to produce a local study of the First World War on its own website. If you did this, we would be willing to provide a link to your site in our local history section.
