Leslie
Illingworth was
born in Barry, South Wales on 2nd September, 1902. After
attending Cardiff Art School he joined
the Lithographic Department of the Western
Mail.
Illingworth went on a scholarship to the Slade
Art School and in 1920 returned to the
Western Mail
as a cartoonist. Over the next few years his cartoons were published
in several journals including Punch Magazine
and Good
Housekeeping.
In 1939 Illingworth joined the Daily Mail
and in 1945 took over from Bernard Partridge
as chief cartoonist for Punch
Magazine.
Illingworth remained at the Daily Mail
for twenty-nine years where he developed an impressive team of cartoonists
that included Ralph
Steadman
and Wally Fawkes. Leslie
Illingworth
died in 1979.
