Odo, the son of Herluin of Conteville and Herleva of Falaise, was born in about 1036. He was the brother of Robert of Mortain and half-brother of William of Normandy and Richard FitzGilbert.
Odo fought at the Battle of Hastings and was afterwards created Earl of Kent. Odo usually acted as regent when William I was in Normandy.
When William I died in 1087, Odo wanted Robert of Normandy to be England's new king. The following year Odo joined with Richard FitzGilbert and other Norman barons in an attempt to overthrow William II. This ended in failure and Odo was forced to leave the country.
In his final years Odo organised the rebuilding of Bayeux Cathedral and is believed to have commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry. Odo of Bayeux died in 1097.
