A Career in Marketing
Marketing is a diverse field that encompasses a wide variety of professional roles. A degree in marketing is not essential to the creation of a successful career within the sector. Indeed, marketing roles often require skills that come from a wide variety of other fields and that are interchangeable and of equal value. Solid communication skills are essential and teamwork is a must. An ability to listen to client concerns with care and to cooperate effectively and creatively with colleagues is another useful skill. If you think you’ve got these first three covered, what else can you do to help boost your chances of a career in marketing?
Keep abreast of social changes within media. This means maintaining a working knowledge of the economy and changing attitudes towards money as much as it means keeping up with new forms of social media and networking sites. Understanding attitudes towards work and spending and making sure that you are familiar with the role of Facebook, Twitter and MySpace in the marketing scene will help to prove that you are a switched on candidate.
Prior to graduation, keep your eyes glued to the Guardian marketing jobs website and see what requirements are stipulated for new employees in the world of marketing. It might be that you land yourself a place on a grad scheme or a position that includes some in-house training. If not, you could require some extra work experience and it will stand you in good stead to know about this before you start your own batch of applications.
Where possible, use your time at university to boost your professional experience as well as your academic qualifications. Work experience placements, internships, volunteering schemes are all heavily promoted through university careers offices and all it takes to get involved is a little initiative and research on your part. Through schemes such as these you will gain valuable hands on experience and professional insight but, beyond simply giving your CV a boost, you could also find yourself making contacts that are useful to you once you step into the big wide world of work.
