(1) Read the first three paragraphs of Feudal System and source S1. Explain what is taking place in this picture.

(3) Study source S1 below.

(a) Describe the Clare coat of arms.

(b) Explain why knights had their family coat of arms on their shields and surcoats.


(4) Study the drawing of Sir John de Abernon (source S2 below) and source S1. Can you explain why these two knights have similar coats of arms? It might help you to reread your answer for question.

 

(5) Read the last two paragraphs of Feudal System and study the chart on Feudalism. What did peasants have to do to obtain land from people like Richard de Clare?

 

(6) Explain the difference between a serf and a freeman.

 

(7) Study the Clare Estates in 1086.

(a) Give as many reasons as you can why Richard de Clare built a castle at Tonbridge.

(b) Name Richard de Clare's two main homes in England.

(c) King William granted Richard de Clare manors all over England. Can you explain why King William did not grant Richard de Clare just one large block of land?
