Pilgrimage and Monasteries

 

(1) Read Pilgrimage. Study the woodcut. (a) What is the pilgrim wearing on his hat? (b) Why is he wearing these things on his hat?

(2) People still go on pilgrimages today. How do these modem pilgrimages differ from medieval pilgrimages?

(3) Why did so many monasteries refuse to accept the relic described in source 5? Give some reasons why Brabham monastery decided to take the relic.

(4) Read Pilgrimage to Canterbury. Look at source 1. Do you think these holy relics were genuine? Explain your answer.

(5) Read Norman Monasteries. Source 1 describes the activities of the Cistercian order. Does William of Malmesbury approve or disapprove of the Cistercians? (b) Study source 3. After reading this account would it be correct to say that all Cistercians "only had one meal a day, except on Sunday"?

(6) Write a dialogue between a husband and wife living in England in 1200. The man has poor eyesight and believes it will be improved if he visits St. Thomas Becket's tomb. His wife is against him going to Canterbury. In your dialogue include the following words: dangerous, robbers, cured, heaven, relics, journey and badge.

(7) Imagine you are a Benedictine monk who visits Canterbury Priory in 1300. Write a letter to the Archbishop of Canterbury complaining about the behaviour of the monks living in the priory.
