John of Salisbury
John of Salisbury was born in Hampshire in about 1110. After studying in Paris he became secretary to Thomas Becket, the archbishop of Canterbury. John of Salisbury supported Becket in his conflict with Henry II and in 1164 he was forced to leave the country. Later John of Salisbury wrote a short biography of Becket.
He was a keen writer and as well as several books on religious and political matters, a considerable number of his letters have also survived. John of Salisbury died in 1180.
