George Fitton was born in Melton Mowbray on 16th May 1902. He played non-league football for Kidderminster Harriers before joining West Bromwich Albion in 1922.
Fitton, an outside-left, scored 11 goals in 96 league appearances over a nine year period. In 1931 he moved to Manchester United who were in the Second Division at the time. Once again he was unable to gain a regular place in the side and only played 11 games that year.
Midway through the 1932-33 season Fitton joined Preston North End. He got a good start by scoring 7 goals in 15 matches.
By the 1933-34 season Fitton was a member of a a talented squad that included Bill Shankly, George Holdcroft, Robert Kelly, Frank Gallimore, Bill Tremelling, Jimmy Milne, John Pears, John Palethorpe, Henry Lowe, Billy Hough, Frank Beresford and George Bargh.
Two strikers, George Stephenson and Jimmy Dougal also joined the club that season. Preston North End at last achieved promotion to the First Division when they finished runners-up to Grimsby Town. Fitton scored his fair share of goals but was mainly remembered for creating chances for Stephenson, Dougal and Palethorpe.
Fitton also did well in the 1934-35 season and scored a total of 18 goals in 62 games before he was sold to Third Division side, Coventry City. In his first season he helped Coventry win promotion to the Second Division. Fitton stayed two seasons, scoring 21 goals in 51 games. He ended his career at Kidderminister Harriers.
