Alexander Hair was born in Glasgow on 9th March, 1902. He joined Partick Thistle in the Scottish League. Hair did well in Scotland and at the start of the 1928-29 season, Alex Gibson persuaded him to join Preston North End. In his first season he scored 19 goals in 31 games. However, Preston only finished in 13th place of the Second Division.

Hair was not so effective in the 1929-30 season and found it difficult to hold his place in the first team. Considered to be past his best by Alex Gibson, Hair was allowed to join Shelbourne in Irish Football League. Alex Hair also played for Colwyn Bay United before retiring from football.
