Thomas Perronet Thompson, the son of a Methodist
preacher, was born in Hull in 1783. Educated
at Hull Grammar School and Queen's College,
Cambridge, he graduated in 1802.
Thompson
was a midshipman in the navy before entering the army and served as
a lieutenant in the 95th Rifle regiment. Promoted to the rank of major-general,
Thompson was Governor of Sierra Leone from August 1808 to June 1810.
A
radical reformer, Thompson was the author of the True
Theory of Rent and A Catechism
on the Corn Laws. He was also joint proprietor of the Westminster
Review (1825
to 1835) and wrote several articles for the magazine where he advocated
universal suffrage.
Thompson
was elected to the House of Commons to
represent Hull in 1835. He lost his seat in 1837 and failed to be
elected in Marylebone (1838), Manchester (1839), Hull (1941), Cheltenham
(1841) and Sunderland (1845). In 1847 Thompson was successfully elected
to represent Bradford. Thomas Perronet Thompson died
on 6th September 1869.
