Alfred Charles was born in Trinidad on the 11th July, 1909.

He moved to England and in 1933 he signed for Burnley. An inside-right, he failed to get into the club's first-team and so moved on to play for Nelson and Darwen.

In 1936 he signed for Southampton. However, he played only one first-team before moving onto Stalybridge Celtic.

Charles was one of the first non-white footballers to play in Britain before the Second World War. Others in this category included Arthur Wharton, Hassan Hegazi, Walter Tull, Salim Bachi Khan and Hong Ying Soo.

Alfred Charles died in 1977.
