Mixed Brigades grew out
of the government's
decision to merge various militias into the Republican
Army.
A battalion was made up of one machine-gun company and three companies
of infantrymen. Political commissars were added to Mixed Brigades
in order to make sure the soldiers remained loyal to the Popular
Front government. The Mixed Brigades fought in all the major battles
of the Spanish
Civil War.
