Samuel Cooper was born in 1609. After studying painting under his uncle, John Hoskins, he travelled around Europe. He later emerged as the greatest English miniaturist of the 17th Century.

Cooper painted portraits of Oliver Cromwell, John Milton, George Monck, John Pym, Earl of Newcastle, Henry Ireton, Oliver Cromwell, Richard Cromwell, Robert Lilburne, John Carew, Earl of Shaftesbury, Charles II and James II.

Samuel Cooper died on 5th May, 1672.
