Spanish Armada Activities

To answer these questions you will need to look at the Spanish Armada.

(1) Philip II believed that when the Spanish invaded, the Catholics living in England would joined him in his struggle against Elizabeth. Did Petruccio Ubaldino (source A4) agree with Philip II?

(2) Give as many reasons as you can why Philip II decided to invade England.

(3) Study sources A5 and A6. (a) Compare these two different accounts of why the Spanish Armada was defeated. (b) Give one reason why these two historians took different views on this subject.

(4) Read the British and Spanish accounts on the Spanish Armada (A8 to A31). Print out the Spanish Armada Sources Chart and then fill it in.

(5) Study your chart. Explain why it is important to historians to study sources that have been produced by people from different nationalities when writing about military conflict.

(6) Read L. Ortiz Munoz (source A32). This account of the Spanish Armada was written in 1940. Write an account of the Spanish Armada that might have appeared in a British textbook during the Second World War. Underline those passages that show nationalistic bias.
