The Ridolfo Plot
In 1570, Roberto di Ridolfo, from Florence, organized a Roman Catholic plot, to overthrow Elizabeth. The plan, supported by Spain, involved assassinating Elizabeth, Mary, Queen of Scots, marrying Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk and a Spanish invasion of England. The plot was uncovered by Francis Walsingham and Ridolfo was forced to flee to Italy.
