Stephen Walsh was born in 1859. He started work as a coal miner
at the age of 14. In 1901 became an agent at Wigan for the Lancashire
and Cheshire Miners' Federation. A member of the Labour
Party, Walsh was elected to the House of
Commons in December 1906.
During
the First World War Walsh supported David
Lloyd George and
his coalition government. He was rewarded by being appointed parliamentary
secretary to the Ministry of National Service (March to July 1917)
and the Local Government Board (July 1917 to January 1919).
Walsh
was Vice-President of National Union of Mineworkers
(1922-24)
but resigned when Ramsay MacDonald
appointed
him Secretary of State for War in January 1924. He held the post until
the Labour Party lost power in November
1924. Stephen Walsh died
on 16th March 1929.
