Primary Department

Paul Carter: I have been a primary school teacher for the past 10 years. At present I am working as an ICT Manager in a junior school on the South Coast of England. In previous years, I have also been Co-ordinator for both English, Design Technology and Special Educational Needs. Two years ago, I produced the Key Stage 1 and 2 ICT Powerstations for Digitalbrain, and this led me on to develop my own websites. I currently run and manage Clickteaching (designed to support teachers and schools by providing easy access to a range of top quality teaching resources), and TopMat (an online learning station for primary children). I am keen to develop further online resources that will motivate and stimulate both children and teachers.

Joy Simpson: I have been teaching in the primary sector for 17 years. I am at present a Deputy Headteacher in a middle school and, amongst many other things, Literacy Co-Ordinator. From September I shall be working as a Literacy Consultant for my LEA. I use the internet regularly to find resources and information which includes visiting government websites related to education. In my spare time I run a website, Literacy Lessons, where I share my literacy work with others in order to reduce the amount of time primary teachers, and soon KS3 teachers, spend planning.

Derek Allen: Thirty-six years a primary teacher, having been headteacher of Snaith Primary School in East Yorkshire for the last 21 and still going strong. Over the last 20 years I have written software for BBC and Acorn machines ( Droom, Albert's House, Wordworks, Sumthing etc ). I moved over to the PC two years ago at the beginning of NgFL. Found the Internet to be barren of good resources for Primary Schools, so decided to write some. Hence our school website Thinking Things from Snaith. I am fascinated by the level of personal communication that children can experience through the Internet, especially in the European dimension.

Sue Spolton: I am a primary school teacher in the Nottingham area, with twenty-five years experience. For six years I have been keenly interested in how the Internet can promote learning. My frustration in initially not being able to find good educational resources led me to create Topmarks in 1998. Topmarks has been encouragingly received as a popular educational portal for all age groups and subjects. I believe this is due to the fact that I feature only the highest quality teaching and learning resources - a common aim with other ATW members. I have also created several online religious materials for use with KS2 pupils.

Mark Taylor: I have been teaching since 1992 in the primary sector although my initial teacher training was as a secondary science teacher. I am currently the science co-ordinator at Acock's Green Junior school in Birmingham. I see the internet as a great opportunity for teachers to share best practice, resources and ideas. To that end I have invested time in developing a KS2 science website ScienceZone that I believe will be of value to the wider teaching community.

Leon Cych: I am ICT co-ordinator at All Souls School in central London. Our school had one of the first web pages (non-commercial or university) in the UK. As well as full time class teacher for 23 years I have worked writing web resources for the BBC, BECTA, Digitalbrain, Science and Frankin Museums amongst others. I am currently on secondment as educational consultant with the HTI and working for the arts broadband company Digital Classics. I'm also conducting R & D research
(and implementing it!) into the use of interactive streaming media over the web in VLE environments through broadband. I also maintain the site Department for Electronic Education which is a project to put quality early years software into most NOF training schools. We have given away over 1000 CD's to date.

English Department

Andrew Moore: I have taught English in secondary schools for twenty-one years. I am currently working for the East Riding of Yorkshire School Improvement Service as a project manager for ICT. I started to use Internet technologies to support my own teaching groups, and found that lots of other people wanted to use them. My English Teaching Resource site was one of the first to be listed by the NGfL - it now receives traffic from around the world, and thousands of page impressions every week. I am a member of the European Virtual School English department, a founder member of the Association of Teachers' Websites, and the head of English for the Teachers' Virtual School. I have written other educational Web sites, including an archive site for letters from the Great War and a site for teaching about Anne Frank and the Holocaust. I am also involved in the Babelnet English Project.

Siobhain Archer: I am founder and editor of Teachit, one of the web's largest and most popular resources for teachers of English, Media Studies and Drama. Prior to working full-time on website, I taught English at Goffs school in Cheshunt and English and Drama at St Marks school in Bath. I still keep my 'hand in' by running specialist IT based Saturday workshops and summer schools in conjunction with BaNES LEA. A founder member of the Association of Teachers' Websites, I produce online lessons for Learn and previously for The Daily Telegraph's virtual school, and write a regular 'Online English Teacher' column for Ink Pellet magazine. I trained to be a teacher at Hertfordshire University after a stint in magazine publishing and exhibitions organisation. I received my English degree from Sussex University in 1993.

Duncan Grey: I am Head of Learning Resources and an English teacher at Hinchingbrooke School, Huntingdon. I saw the Internet as a way of expanding the materials base of my resources centre and went online in 1994, producing the first UK secondary school website in February 1995 (which I still maintain) and the book The Internet in School in 1998.I give talks on information handling skills and developing resource based learning. I write classroom materials on ICT, information skills and English, especially English language, which I teach at A level.

Harry Dodds: I have been an English teacher since 1970, first in Gloucestershire and then in Oxfordshire, where I am now Head of English at Gosford Hill School, Oxford Road, Kidlington. It is a truly comprehensive school, so I am used to working with students of all ages and from all backgrounds. It's an innovative ICT school - we are the first in the country to have a wireless-based Internet link to our 5 Primary feeder schools, and I am fascinated to see just what we will make of it.I have a well-established home page, English Teaching in the United Kingdom, full of selected Internet resources and links. Experimenting with this is what led me to believe that the future of education lies in electronically networked and increasingly interactive learning. I am a member of a BECTa consultative group which has been looking at the ICT components of the new National Curriculum orders, and am delighted to see how traditional definitions of the English curriculum are expanding to take in developments in computer moderated communications.

Steve Baker: After an English degree at York University and a P.G.C.E. at Leeds I started as an English teacher at Hall Mead School in Upminster. While there I was tricked into taking a class in Media Studies and discovered where my interests really lie. I have gradually been removed from English in the years since and after nine years in charge of Media at Havering Sixth Form College am about to take up the head of Media post at Christ the King Sixth Form College in my home town of Blackheath.

Steve Campsall: I have been teaching since 1995, entering the profession later in life following a management career in international pharmaceutical marketing. I am currently teaching English and Media Studies at Beauchamp College in Oadby, Leicester, a successful Leicestershire technology college. My English revision website, EnglishBiz, is approved by NGfL and other national bodies. It is my attempt to provide a straightforward, easily accessible and more inclusive revision experience for students; it was created in response to my suspicion that many web sites are aimed mainly at the higher achiever. I look forward to the time when a student's reward for a web search is more than just a slowly revealed page of text - the sooner we all have broadband the better!

I am currently a part-time lecturer with The College, the reminder of my time being largely taken-up with the running of the Sociology Central website, although I occasionally find the time to lecture at Sociology Conferences (usually on the subject of Sociology and the Internet). My additional interests include resource-based and problem-based Learning techniques.

Chris Trueman: I have been teaching since September 1980 in the secondary sector. I am at present Head of Year 7 at a large community college in West Sussex. I frequently use the Internet to find out information that, if relevant, is used in my lessons and passed on to my colleagues. In my spare time I run the History Learning Site which also includes a section on British and American politics aimed at Advanced level students. The site contains lessons/work sheets which other collegues can use free of charge right through from KS3 to AS and A2.
