Edwin
Sumner was born in 1797. He joined
the USA Army in 1819 and fought in the
Mexican War. On the outbreak of the
American Civil War Sumner was placed
in command of the Department of the Pacific. After the battle at Antietam
(September, 1862). Sumner was promoted to the rank of major general.
Criticized for his performance at Fredericksburg
(November, 1862), Sumner asked to be relieved of his command. Sumner
died on 21st March, 1863.
