Samuel Adler was born in Worms, Germany in 1809. He was a rabbi in Germany (1842-57) before emigrating to the United States in 1857. He was rabbi of the Temple Emanu-El in New York and played a leading role in the reform movement. Adler, who revised the prayer book, died in 1891.
