The Ladies Home Journal was founded in 1883 as a women's supplement to the Tribune and Farmer. The following year it became an independent publication. Owned by Cyrus H. Curtis, it was edited by his wife, Louisa Knapp, until replaced by Edward Bok in 1889. Bok editing the journal for thirty years and during this time published the work of social reformers such as Jane Addams.
