Henry
Scholte was
born in Holland. An opponent of the State
Church, Scholte decided to emigrate to the United States. He arrived
in August, 1847, and obtained 18,000 acres in Marion County. Over
the next few years his followers established the towns of Pella and
Orange City. The settlers concentrated on beet sugar, vegetables and
dairy products.
