David Lloyd was a member of the British Army and played football for the 3rd Grenadier Guards. In his first full season in 1896/97 his team won the London League Championship. The following season he played for Brentford, where he won his second medal when his club won the London Senior Cup. Francis Payne persuaded Lloyd to move to Thames Iron Works for the 1898-1899 season. This six foot four inches defender played his first two games at full-back. He played his third game as centre forward and rewarded the club by scoring a hat-trick. That season he scored 12 goals in only 11 league appearances. Brilliant in the air, Lloyd scored a lot of his goals with his head. Thames Iron Works easily won the Southern League Division 2 that season and Lloyd got his third medal in a row. Lloyd moved to Fulham in 1899 and over the next two seasons scored 24 goals in 43 matches in all competitions. Lloyd left Fulham to take part in the Boer War. At the end of the war he returned to play for Fulham before joining Willesden Town in August 1904.
