Charlie Simmons joined West Bromwich Albion in 1898 from Worcester Rovers. He soon emerged as one of the club's stars and was considered unlucky not to play for the full international side. One contemporary described him as a "wonderful ball player with a deceptive body-swerve". After losing top goalscorers Charlie Satterthwaite and William Kirby in 1904, Syd King signed Simmons to partner Billy Bridgeman and Jack Fletcher up front for West Ham. By the end of the season West Ham had scored 48 goals in 34 league games. Simmons got eight of these goals. However he left the club in 1905.
