American History > The American West > Saddle Saddle The saddle used by cowboys was adapted from those used by Spanish-Mexican Vaqueros. The lariat was wrapped wrapped round the stout horn on his saddle. This would anchor a cow after it had been roped. It also had leather-clad stirrups.
